Recycling Your Yard Wastes

Benefits of the green waste program in Fortuna

The Eel River Disposal Company now picks up green waste in Fortuna, for several reasons. Due to state recycling mandates, the collection of green materials assists the City in meeting our waste diversion goals. Furthermore, this service was something that residents wanted so that they could easily manage their leaves, branches, weeds, and etc. Additionally, keeping this material out of the Anderson Landfill prevents pollution. Green waste collection also keeps excess grass clippings and the like out of our creeks, which benefits aquatic life.

Along some creek banks in Fortuna, you can spot piles of garden debris. Although folks may intend to provide erosion control with these accumulations, this practice is actually detrimental to water quality, especially when lots of piles exist right next to creek channels. When green materials are washed into creeks and the Eel River, they keep decaying, and this also decreases the availability of oxygen in the water for fish and other critters. The placement of plants, especially natives, near water sources is a natural way to filter stormwater runoff, provide habitat, and the vegetation helps to hold soil in place.

Another way to keep green waste out of the landfill is to start composting. Using a compost bin can decrease your waste by 20 – 30%, and your homemade soil amendment reduces stormwater pollution. Compost bins are available from the cities of Fortuna and Rio Dell at a discounted price. The Earth Machine can help you to recycle 80 gallons (or ten cubic feet) of grass clippings, leaves, vegetarian food scraps, paper towels, and more
