Single Stream Recycling.
What's single stream recycling?
Instead of having to sort your recyclables into separate classes, you just toss them all into this big bin and it gets picked up every other week. It's easier for you and it'll make you feel good because you're doing something to benefit our environment. Because it will reduce the size of your garbage can, it will even save you money! Call Eel River Disposal at 725-5156 to order this service today!
What goes into the bin?
#1 - #7 plastics (Bottles, containers, jugs, and plastic bags), metal cans (aluminum, steel, tin, foil pie plates, and empty spray cans), cardboard (includes pasteboard boxes, chipboard containers, paper towel rolls, and folders), glass (bottles and glass jars only), paper (newspaper, magazines,
telephone books, catalogs, junk mail, envelopes, brochures). Here's more information in a printable PDF file.
What can't go into the recycling bin?
Here’s a partial list of stuff that does NOT belong in your recycling cart: dirt, potting soil, ribbons, bows, corks from wine bottles, rubber gloves, garden hoses, full bags of dog food, clothes, towels, shoes, light bulbs, glass vases, Styrofoam trays, Styrofoam peanuts, Styrofoam egg cartons, puzzle pieces, carpet, scotch tape dispensers, six pack rings, shoelaces, paper towels, hairbrushes, and CDs.
Please note – the materials listed above were erroneously added to recycling carts in the past. You can help to keep recycling simpler for all parties by not adding bags of recyclables to your cart.
Single stream is easy when you just place all recyclables loosely into your cart and set it out properly for pickup. Also, please remove lids from containers and take newspapers out of the plastic bags. Bagged up shredded paper can be dropped off at 965 Riverwalk Drive. Small amounts of shredded paper, dirt, potting soil, and paper towels can also be added to your compost bin. Thank you for helping us to recycle more in Fortuna.
So everything else goes into the trash?
No no no, absolutely not! The whole idea is to keep stuff out of the landfill. First see if you can use it for some other purpose. Check if someone else might want it or could use it. Set in on your front lawn with a "Free!" sign on it. Post it on a bulletin board or place a free ad in the Tri-City Weekly or on Humboldt Freecycle. Ask the thrift store if they wish to resell it.
Recycle your automobile fluids, scrap wood, metal items, even your left over paint. Set up a composter in your back yard!
