City of Fortuna's "Buy Recycled" Policy

The City of Fortuna recently adopted a “buy recycled” policy. It is the City’s intent to increase the purchase of products that are recyclable and/or made from recycled materials. Whenever possible, City employees are encouraged to reduce, reuse, recycle, and buy recycled. The procurement of recycled content materials fosters market development, while helping the City to achieve and maintain compliance with the mandates of the California Integrated Waste Management Act of 1989 (AB 939).

According to the California Integrated Waste Management Board, buying recycled-content products provides the following benefits: saves money, creates jobs, reduces waste and pollution, and conserves energy and natural resources. Additional details can be found here.

Here’s a brief list of recycled content merchandise available in Fortuna:

  • Compost and mulches are derived from recycled organic materials
  • Compost bins sold at City Hall are made of recycled plastic
  • Fire & Light dishware at the River Lodge Gift Shop made from recycled glass
  • Humboldt Beacon is printed on recycled-content paper
  • Office products, such as copier paper, envelopes, folders, and paper towels
  • Re-refined motor oil at Renner’s Newburg Road facility
  • Second-hand treasures at thrift stores or antique shops
  • Steel jacks, pipes, shelving, etc.
  • Wood-polymer lumber from Forbusco.
